No, not that I know of.
We could use the date on the desktop file as the "installation date", but I'm
pretty sure we can use it reliably as a modification date, hence my asking
above.

No, I don't think so. Sorting by *installation* date seems important IMO. I've
found myself wanting this from time to time. Date of last update isn't the same
thing.
