Actually, just tested:
git checkout Applications/16.08 of kate, also with:
qt5-qtbase-devel-5.9.6-4.fc27.i686
(same qt I tested konq with), and I cannot reproduce the crash on closing a
view in kate. Is it possible

So I have the latest source, and saw there are some cmake files, and from
memory I think the way to do it is "mkdir build; cd build; cmake ../src"
