Still happening reproduceably in KMail 5.4.2 (on archlinux).
Changes to the trash folder location only take effect after a restart.
EDIT: Can also more easily be fixed by restarting akonadi.

* I can confirm, this is happening after logout -> login as with Martin Ottmar
* Adding an event in KOrganizer while the PIM Events Plugin is not working does

After a restart (and upgrade to KMail 5.4.1) all my trash folders seem to be
working, so I think (at least for KMail 5.4.1) my issue seems to be a duplicate
