OK, I installed GNOME and I had this freeze also with GNOME.
Maybe it has something to do with the kernel or the NVIDIA driver.

BTW I also checked plasma taskmanagers, their design decision is that they
never stop... so as long a window has set INATTENTION flag the plasma panels
are shown without being able to hide at all.
