Not sure if it helps the discussion, but taking a quick look at
AssimpImporter::assimpSupportedFormats() in
qt3d/src/plugins/sceneparsers/assimp/assimpimporter.cpp, "blend" is in fact
listed as a supported format (along with 52 other formats).

No immediate ideas unfortunately, but it could well be that widgets (raster
windows) do not behave as well in this regard as pure OpenGL windows (Qt Quick
and friends). The multi-head work in the past was focused on the latter.
