problem with sync_server and CYRUS_SERVICE

Folks, I have been building and using Cyrus IMAP since 1995, but I've just run into an issue I've never encountered before. I've had the same issue with 2.4.16 and 2.5, both built from sources retrieved via Git. This is on Ubuntu 12.04.01 LTS, in LXC containers on an Ubuntu 12.04.01 LTS host.
