Not sure if this is relevant, but on my big Linux/Cyrus server I had
to:
echo 16384 > /proc/sys/fs/file-max
to increase the total number of file descriptors that can be open at
one time.
I didn't have to use ulimit or anything else...
This should probably be included in the cyrus-docs somewhere;
