to my user account's group, and make sure the path to the source directory is
g+rx (because I don't like running gdb as root).

I guess you're missing the fact that these options have possibly changed
between releases. Another thing is that distribution packages can also
alter the defaults and if they don't do it correct, they may "forget" to
also change the docs accordingly.

might be confusing for users who used to
just log in with "uid", but depending on the size of your
organisation, might be less confusing overall if everyone's
login is their full mail address.
