I believe I have narrowed my issue down to a bug in the 3.14.14 kernel.

I have recently had some woes with my Cyrus daemon (2.4.17), and I have
not been
successful at troubleshooting it myself. I did a system update (Gentoo)
over the weekend, and ever since then Cyrus works for a bit and then
dies with this in the logs:
