like, which have a different structure (ie, no /etc/shadow file)

I'm having fun and games @ the moment on Solaris. Inconsistent results
between cyradm and imtest, but I digress...
Try using -a pam or -a shadow, see how you go. Check the auth debug log
(as documented).
