I'm getting pretty much the same error (C compiler cannot create executables).
I'm pretty sure it's because gcc-3.3.4 is installed. I've tried upgrading gcc
by emerging but get the same error (catch-22 situation).

I used a 3com ISDN modem for net and voice for a while. It had an ethernet
connection and a USB. I used the ethernet port to connect to my gentoo box. It
was just easier.

emerged gentools. That did the trick.

I'm having a trouble starting mysql since I emerged the newer version.
'mysqld.sock' doesn't exist and the logs aren't much help. Any help is
greatly appreciated.
