Hi list,
this may be a trivial question, but I really
don't know anything about networking.
When I connect my laptop to the internet
through my Netgear router, both firefox and
galeon work fine, but I can not run emerge:

I'm getting this when I emerge samba. Is this an outright bug, or something
wrong on 'my side'?

deleted a very important email. I was browsing the message list and a
long string of characters showed up along the bottom, but I pressed
the next button too quickly to see what it said. All the messages

Thanks for all your explanations, but the funny thing is that I am German. :D
I just didn't know about the two different meanings of the word "decline",
what is rather embarassing due to the fact that I learned (or had to lean)
Latin. Every word starting with "de(c/k)la..." should make me remembe

Latin has the four cases Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative and
additionally the Vocative and the Ablative. I haven't seen any other
languages with six cases. As you can imagine, it's quite tiring to learn
Latin. :-\
Just for your information.

That's quite impressive. I guess it's a great advantage if you learn such
languages
A million thank-yous!
After the upgrade, along with the java-applet feel, all the text became
extra tiny all over the place. It reminded me of fluxbox in some
fashion. Last night my glasses broke and it just made things worse.
Everything works well again.

I've lost xpdf association in evolution-2.8.2.1 (after upgrade). I'm
using Evolution with KDE.
When I run: "update-desktop-database" as root Kpdf, KghostView, Xpdf

open pdf in Xpdf doens't work. I like Xpdf better as it allow

I'm setting up my first Gentoo installation, and have an HP PSC1610
inkjet connected via USB. Everything seems to be right:
- lsusb lists it as Bus 0004 Device 0003: ID 03f0:4811 Hewlett-Packard
- the CUPS admin page on port 631 installed and lists it .
But: the CUPS page also shows:

Can anyone suggest a simple, easy-to-use software package for light
editing of video files (cutting commercials out of MythTV recordings).
I tried to use avidemux, but it went into an infinite loop when I tried
to save the file after editing. bugs.gentoo.org suggests to me that a
fix isn't coming.
