In addition to what everyone else has mentioned. External modems work on /dev/ttyS0../dev/ttyS3 (DOS COM1:..COM4:). Internal PCI modems work on /dev/ttyS4 or higher. Some kernels default to only supporting the 4 external ports, and internal PCI modems won't run. To support internal PCI modems
