I enabled framebuffer on the kernel (vesa-fb with 1280x1024
resolution) and I use this grub menu entry for framebuffer:
kernel /bzImage-fb1280 root=/dev/hda8 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr
vga=0x0317 splash=verbose,theme:Gentoo-Hornet
