Whats your line in fstab for /home?
It does sound cron-job like. Installed a cron daemon recently? Check
/etc/cron.daily or crontab -l
Does ownership change? Permissions?

If you use the nvidia driver, you might have problems. I tried using fbsplash
with 2.6.12-r6 and -r4 using vidia 7667 drivers, but no luck with rivafb, vesafb
or nvidiafb. I then searched nvidia forums and read their readme and apparently
their driver deosnt support framebuffering very well.

Enabling splash in the kernel causes text to start a 1/3 of the way over on the
screen and wraps around (after decompressing kernel). Hardly legible and no
splash image to be seen, nvidia module will not load (no screens found error)
and editing files is difficult due to this shifted display effect
