permissions set correctly? Normally paludis will (or it used to anyway)
complain loudly when the permissions werent set correctly.

How much RAM do you have? With all those windows and tabs open im guessing
your running out of RAM which may be causing the crashes, do you have a swap
file? If so, how big is it and have you tried increasing its size?
A big swap file may help, although dont expect your system to be responsive
:)
Please, if your going to set the LINGUAS value dont use package.use :)
If you have to then use make.conf, although the best solution is to set it
in /etc/env.d, a quick search of the forums will give you some good examples
if your not sure.
