As far as I know the typical way to edit metadata.xml files for all of us is
still by hand in a text editor, and I prefer a lot typing

The "project" is just a few lines anyway: merely a wrapper to the library.
All the work happens in the itext library which AFAIK is the same project
(in different versions)
