I have not tried that yet. While searching on the MSI HP i found some
newer BIOS Versions, yet the showed changelog didnt mention any problems

* Maxtor 7V300F0 Harddrive
Using the same motherboard but with PATA drives. Works great.

Try using the experimental universal livecd, released December 11, 2005.
The official 2005.1-r1 livecd wouldn't work for my motherboard + SATA
drive either.
You can also try booting with gentoo nodetect, and then try modprobing
sata_nv and your ethernet card.
