IRQ processing smells like the problem - trouble pops up with
NFS/ftp/ping/whatever, but only when I saturate the link. Back to .28 until

Have you tried passing the -p option to netstat? That should show you what
program/pid opened each port.

Yeah, that was very weird. zlib builds fine now, and it does seem that the
fPIC patch did get modified sometime over the past few days. (I compiled zlib
maybe 3-4 days ago.)

I think (in general) the "stable" nvidia drivers in portage are useless, so
even if you're not using ~amd64, you should at least have the "unstable" nvidia
drivers, as they are way more stable than the "stable" ones.
