Put a new harddisk into your system, partition it as you like, and use tar -cSp --numeric-owner --atime-preserve -f - /mnt/OLD/* | ( cd mnt/NEW/ && tar -xSpv --atime-preserve -f - ) to copy your linux system/data/whatever. I have done so many times, this works perfectly, e.g. also to change files
