You may want to try

http://sourceforge.net/projects/osm2shpjava/
or use
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Osm2pgsql
and convert to a shapefile from PostGIS.
The last choice requires a postgresql/postgis setup but is very well teste

OSM format has way too many tags. Also, it would just be a readonly driver.

Hi all,
open street map has a lot of data in an XML format. This format isn't listed amongst the compatible formats on http://www.gdal.org/ogr/ogr_formats.html Is there any recommendations for how to translate osm files into shapefiles or mapinfo tables?
