You can use -oo REMOVE_UNUSED_LAYERS=YES (and -oo REMOVE_UNUSED_FIELDS=YES) to
get only the relevant layers for what is real
and it finds huge

Just to inform you I've commited an initial version (read-only for now, write
support to come) of the OGR GMLAS driver into trunk. This driver can read XML
files of (almost) arbitrary structure, included those containing so called
Complex Features, provided that they are accompanied by one
