on to older gdal versions (we had 1.8.x) in Mageia 1
where tgis problem did not occur.
Anybody having an idea, what could be responsible for this?

Hi,
I know, you are only talking about a beta1 right now, but as package
maintainer at Mageia, I would be interested to know if there will be any
bigger api changes, making it difficult to build apps linking against libgdal.
By the way, do you have any roadmap for gdal-1.9?

I have a strange problem installing gdal-1.8.0 on a debian squeeze 64bit
server.
I'm using the following configure:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/gdal-1.8.0 --with-xerces=yes
Installed are:
libxerces-c-dev 3.1.1-1+b1
libxerces-c3.1 3.1.1-1+b1
out of the debian reposit
