And thanks for your swift reply.
After removing the dust from my MSVC 2010 express, I managed to build the trunk
version of GDAL on Win 7 Pro (happy that I wrote down the build procedure here:
https://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/wiki/SOSI).
The Windows build went fine too and I can now open
