Nobody is planning to add backward compatibility code here.
The exception was added to the 1.4 verifier because it wasn't
possible to correctly compile valid java programs without it.
So, targeting 1.4 makes

Is this a final verdict on this issue? This problem also affects compatibility
with the Sun 1.3 interpreter. Can I take it that the Sun 1.4 interpreter is the
benchmark reference for GCJ going forward?
