Hrm: I considered the problem moot since I was able to get gcc working.
Machine is unavailable for further testing at this point, and thankfully my
contact with SGI has basically ended.

Bootstrapping 4.0.2 via older 3.4.4 appears to work. I'll give the test suite
a whirl if I get the chance.
Thanks for the suggestion (I was a little leery of trying older gccs after my
problems with a different mac

The only thing I can say for this one, is report it to SGI if they are still
supporting the compiler, otherwise use an older GCC (like 3.4.4) to bootstrap
first with and then bootstrap 4.0.2 with that GCC.
