My last succesful build on on x86_64-pc-linux-gnu was:
$ /usr/local/gcc-svn/gfortran --version
GNU Fortran 95 (GCC) 4.3.0 20070114 (experimental)
Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
I suspect this may be a glibc problem as the version of glibc I have is later
than my last successful build of gcc-4.3

Argh -- how embarassing. I'd been looking at it for ages and never seen my
error. I should have used "../trunk/configure " not "../trunk/gcc/configure "
etc.
