I have reverted back several patches and the problem in Comment #15 is not a

The change is certainly intended and the important point is that is not true
that there is no indication of the failure, quite to the contrary the badbit is
set. Try changing your test like this:

the result was that nothing printed. As of versions 3 and later this behavior

First, I am sorry to be a "doubting Thomas" - I finally succeeded in
reproducing the problem.
Second, I unpatched the above and find that this is indeed the problem. I will
