I'm signed on multiple google groups (and I'm admin of one [there can be
multiple admins]). They work without problems. It's by far the easiest
option. No need to put time, money, etc on it.
What is the problem with google?

Try to keep original subject line, and delete all unnecessary text from
reply.
I find using digests not so convenient...
I highly recommend to use gmail and to do separated folders for mailing
lists.
