Same breakage that prevents `installkernel' from working on a RELENG_4
box using src and obj NFS mounted from the CURRENT box that performed
the `buildworld'?

Not quite true. I'm doing i386 4.4-STABLE -> {i386,alpha} 5.0-CURRENT
builds on a nightly basis, and everything is OK, including last night

last time I did it, I had a problem with install, adding LDFLAGS+=
-static to src/usr.bin/xinstall/Makefile fixed the problem.
the problem was using install linked to libc.so.4 to do something
