Thanks for setting me straight on this.
I had pursued my wrong conclusions, and in doing so, found that
FluidSynth (Qsynth) on even Xubuntu 11.10 has the same problem. I don't
think it's a problem with Linux (or the entirely new kernel level). It
isn't a problem with the new Unity desk
