if I launch glxgears from flwm_topside I get 300 FPS, if I launch it from
e17 I get 30.
my card is an old one:

Definitely not. Latest server release 3.5.0-9 was Oct 2011 (build date
Linux rpm). Since version 4 is in the making, 3.5 only receives bugfix
updates
