Actually, it looks like Daniel had a point in his first email .
I tested a "fresh" ubuntu 10.10 by installing what he mentioned and I got to
the end of the compilation stream . This morning I got my hands back on the
machine that I was using yesterday and it looks like I was missing :

If it's the pkgconfig thing (I don't think /usr/local is included by
default) try something like this:
export $PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/e17/lib/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH
something like that, find the pkgconfig file and point to that. You can add
this line to .bashrc to make this permanent, but
