to button 2 and this does work (but it's a useless setup).

Runnin Archlinux with autoconf-2.59 automake-1.9.6 gcc-4.0.3 libtool-1.5.22
epsilon and other libs don't compile. i get autoconf error messages. friends on
fc5 and also sourcemage compile it fine. neither me nor those distros use
special flags/switches for autoconf or m4. i uninstalled my distro
