Just a quick idea i had a few minutes ago: how about colored pointers?
its quite difficult to recognise which is the hour and which the minute
pointer when the clock is very small and colored ones would be of great
help.

I get that error If I'm running a WM (doesn't have to be e17) and I tell
it to start e17. The way I do it involves closing X and using the Xtart
command on my Mandriva box. Hope this helps.
