way to show which icons (applications) have open
windows on the engage bar. i could maybe be a small
black arrow pointing down at the top of the icon. This
makes it easier to follow up your apps (windows).

As far as I can tell, Transparency is window manager independent, You
can set it up for X and it will work no matter which wm you are using.
Try this guide for pointers.
NOTE: this guide is for gentoo, if you are not using that adjust
accordingly.
