until now returns:
gcc -c -I. -I../../../../../src/mesa/drivers/dri/common -Iserver
-I../../../../../include -I../../../../../include/GL/internal

939 and 3GB of ram. I have the ati drivers from git. (About a week old).
Google earth runs fine, a bit stodgy sometimes, glxinfo reports I have dri
etc, but glxgears exits with a DRM error, and dmesg shows
