Was there any discussion of removing this functionality?
I know I would have preferred another way around this.

What do you think about using the following notation for issue fixes:
Prevent the plugin from failing when a sourceDirectory exists,
but it does not contain Java files.
This automatically creates a link to the JIRA issue.
