Remember the community version is open source (
https://github.com/JetBrains/intellij-community ) including the Maven
integration code.
Furthermore bear in mind Apache committers have access to donated licenses
( https://svn.apache.org/repos/private/committers/donated-licenses/ )
including:

Feel free to use IDEA with Java SE - the open source projects can use it for
free AFAIK.
I have personal license with Java EE since 2013, so I am using IDEA in Maven
project with no issues.
@Jason if you need some feedback regarding Maven integration in IDEA, we can
talk about it.

I assume they were having problems with the multi-user OSS license so they only
work for individuals but the system still allows the use of the invitation link
even though it's not allowed.
