ok, workaround for git side effect on empty directories done
now need to understand what's causing the unit-test hang when built with Maven

at least, I can test some little enhancements
notice that git migration causes maven-archetype-plugin "build-archetype" IT
fail since empty directories are removed from git: will need to workaround
this git side-effect

I think it builds fine with 2.2.1. I have not had time to track down the
3.x hang.
