Submitting patches in "diff -u" format helps a lot for committers to
evaluate. It doesn't look bad (but haven't run test on it) on a 5min review,
but it will take a lot longer review before I can agree to commit the changes
(just on weeding out what hasn't changed).

A little more context on this. From this trace below, you can see
that what is going on is the exception is thrown by
PoolableConnection.close(), which tests _conn.isClosed() (driver
call) before returning a connection to the pool. If DBCP thinks the
connection is open - PoolableConnection.isClo

There are a couple of extensions regarding thread pooling and
scheduling that I would, in an ideal world, make to the
java.util.concurrent package. I am trying to find the right open
source project to contribute them to.
Since commons contains the dormant threadpool project I thought it
might be a
