It depends on the project. Some projects are still targeted at 1.3 or
1.4, so generics is a no-go.

Can some other folks chime in on this JIRA issue, please? We've got a
patch submitted, but I don't feel comfortable making the change
without a "second set of eyes" taking a look and seeing if they think
it's an appropriate addition to the API.
