My current fix for this is such:
Install Alsa
Install Ubuntu-Desktop
add "sudo killall pulseaudio" to /ect/rc.local
It still loads pulseaudio and its applications but kills the pulse
drivers that run audio handleing on startup.

I have also had this problem. I own a Lenovo x201 that cannot use
PulseAudio thus I have to use Alsa. So whenever I remove pulse I remove
all meta data dealing with system settings. Is there any information
about this yet?
