"Solved" by simply switching to the X.Org X server Nouveau display driver.
This does not let me use my video card to it's fullest, and there may be issues
when Steam finally ports to Linux, but that's something I can look at later.

I hadn't changed any settings since I upgraded. The old settings were
set "never to turn off screen" or to activate a screen saver or blanker.
I happily manage that manually.

When I say there should be a confirmation box, I mean specifically,
there should be a message box which warns that selecting more than one
package to open will slow down the system, and asks confirmation from
the user before executing their command.
