I have (preliminarily) resolved the issue using the LTS enablement stack
to upgrade to 3.16.0-33-generic along with the appropriate Xorg packages
using the posted commands here:

IMHO the problem is in the coupling between TB and FF. I think it's
quite reasonable that the FF people are more conservative. Who would
want to break a browser with a big market share.
TB on the other hand is client software. An nothing should stop client
I'm really sad that this patch will not land in TB 38. But I want to
make a big thank to Jorg that is working on the correction of this long
standing bug. Also thanks to Ehsan that worked this in the past.
