Glen Ditchfield, thank you for your comment. The requirement for PAE
started with Quantal. Hence, would you be able to boot Precise as
outlined in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE ?

Rüdiger Kupper, thank you for your comment. Could you please test for
this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .
If it remains an issue, please just make a comment to this.
Thank you for your understanding.

** Description changed:
saucy Xorg can launch and display an xterm, but segfaults when twm is
launched, or mouse is moved, or under lightdm. same hardware works fine under
precise. Additional attachment contains:

I tried the config in bug #1267442 and since by forcing the nvidia card
to be the one used at lightdm it triggers an X failsafe display, I think
it might confirm the issue with nvidia-331 and the laptop.

The bug exists when only using nvida-331 and nouveau is blacklisted. Therefore
I would expect the nvidia card to be the default and only card visible but it
does not start.
It only starts if hd4000 is present (either because nvida-331 not installed or
with bumblebee that manages both).

Pa
Christopher,
the vendor-supplied update tool does not indicate any BIOS update. And this is
correct, since the update you refer to has the following release notes:
"<2.30-1.08>
BIOS: 2.30 / ECP: 1.08
- (New) Added support for the new Conexant audio chip."
My laptop has Intel audio, not Conexan
