launching steam and immediately exiting it (via menu, indicator, or
accelerator), launching a game (I only tried uplink) and exiting. In the

I agree with the sentiment about apt, however I thought it was the
current case that if a recommended (same-arch) package isn't available
in the archive, it does get simply ignored.

So far, with (today?)'s update (pulseaudio 1.3), everything's been much
better. Only under heavy system loads has this been a problem.

Also, with headphones, if I plug them in, the speakers still work (sound
plays out of them too) so I have to unplug the speakers from the
computer to just use headphones.

I've tried that kernel 3.4.0 long time ago but I had no luck with it.
Same freezing problem. Since than I've tried 3.6.3 and still having same
