It does indeed seem to be a jack detection issue. I connected headphones
to the front panel headphones socket, and sound played through both!
Disconnecting resinstated the previous sound problems.
My quick and dirty hardware workaround has been to open the desktop case

Thank you for your answer, but I'm not using more Unity because went always in
crash.
I'm using gnome with the old menu. I'm attaching two photos so you can see the

in the right side of the screen. Do you see that isn't more the calendar, the
bottom to
switch off the computer? The menu
... and it's back on later upgrade. Not sure the circumstances but for
a bit at least it *was* good.
