Does dircolors or the new ls --color=auto not support the 'ORPHAN' or 'MISSING' tags, relative to symlinks? A fellow linuxer pointed out that I was still using the old color-ls in my /usr/local/bin and when I switched over, all my symlinks were the wrong color. They actually ended up as

. the one I prefer for simplicity is 'cp -a'. Another way I've seen it done involves tar and pipes. The hardest part about that is that you have to make sure it sets the permissions and users correctly on the second command. Hope this helps. Mike Mattice

Stupid me... another symptom I've noticed is when I try and make a file system on the drive in question, when it stalls I checked another terminal and init was dead and every process that ended was zombieing. Does this point to the kernel at all?? Mike

Thanks again to all who have replied. Apparently the problems I was seeing were from the kernel version I was running. When I upgraded to 2.0.15 all the errors went away. Although the reported errors went away, almost none of the data I've put on the drive comes back off like it's suppo
