su & $PATH

I noticed that after issuing the su command the $PATH variable has a different value. I think that this is quite nasty if i added my own paths to $PATH. Is this a bug, or not? How can I do to make $PATH remain the same? (set $PATH again in bashrc?) Thnx PAolo

OK sorry i shold read the man pages Anyway the problem arises also with gdm: if i run startx in gnome (ALT+F2 -> echo $PATH > ~/what_path) or in a terminal run by gnome the $PATH is ok if i use gdm the $PATH is not ok (since gdm is run as root it will change user id shomewhere)
